Latest News 17 May 2005

AGM was held on 9th May

Details to follow. New committee elected (same people as before). Constitution adopted. The constitution enables us also "to promote other film related activities such as lectures, exhibitions, liason with other groups, and film making". This could open up all sorts of interesting developments, especially as the first year has produced a considerable surplus over what is needed to replace equipment.
e.g. Film making - anyone seen Tarkovsky's Stalker? Science fiction - it could have been set in various bits of the Wirksworth/Middleton post industrial landscape. A story, 3 or 4 actors, a few simple props and it's Cannes here we come!

Feedback

No comments received about Wirksworth Film in general. Complete satisfaction or complete lack of interest ?
Existing members will be invited to re-join before the start of the next season.
Several film titles have been suggested as follows. Please keep sending them, and any other filmsoc suggestions. I will put in links and film info later.
  • Sideways
  • The Damned
  • The End of the Affair
  • A Time for Drunken Donkeys
  • Sol - "not absolutely sure about title, but Argentinean with Piazzola music"
  • House of the Spirits
  • L'Atalante (this year 100th anniversary of Jean Vigo's birth - lots of filmsocs will want this so book early)
  • Katherine Hepburn selection? She died last year. Philadelphia Story?
  • Down by Law
  • Solaris (Tarkovsky)
  • Lawrence of Arabia
  • Les Enfants du Paradis
  • Stalker "better than Solaris"
  • A Room for Romeo Brass
Also a request for more sex! What about Jamon Jamon or The Tit and the Moon?
Another suggestion: to pair films such as The Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven. Or Rififi and A Bout de Soufle?

What does being a film society mean?

The advantages of being a film society are:
  • films can be shown publicly and legally without the burden of regulations of normal cinemas
  • we get low cost licensing concessions from distributors.
  • we have a very large range of films to choose from
  • membership fees collected at the start will cover most of the cost the rest of the season
  • the society is the under the control of the members by means of an AGM and through voluntary help
  • a filmsoc is a worthy community project and so may get support and sponsorship from various sources,
  • there is well established community of film societies offering mutual support and lobbying power
There are small disadvantages:
tickets cannot be sold freely at the door,
not all the latest releases are available immediately,
we are not supposed to advertise - i.e. not to compete with commercial cinemas

A Film Society belongs to the members -
if you join it is yours and you have a say.
